"The Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase," a program akin to "Inside the Actor's Studio" for up-and-coming musicians, has skyrocketed from local to national renown since its premiere on NBC'S digital channel NY Nonstop in January 2010. Now expanding on NBC's digital channels in Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., the rapid growth of the show's platform is not only testament to its successful grassroots concept but in large part to the confidence NBC has for its host and curator Jimmy Lloyd.
"I think 'The Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase' is a great example of the unique and undiscovered music scene of New York," says Allen Blum, VP of Business Development & Strategy at the NBC Local Media Group in NY. "The program itself is well-produced with high production value and top-notch up-and-coming talent. NBC is pleased to expand this promotional partnership with ‘The Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase.”
Built from the ground up by Lloyd and co-executive producer Ashish Naik, the two pitched, produced, and arranged financing for the series entirely on their own. The show's mission is to identify undiscovered musical talent and transport it directly into the living rooms of America. Lloyd, who is more like a next-generation Chris Isaak than James Lipton, is the sole curator of the musically and visually innovative series.
Drawing praise for its eclectic foray into the local music scene, Lloyd, a songwriter himself, solicits talent for the program in an organic fashion. He accepts requests via word of mouth, personal referrals, and/or via email submissions that viewers are invited to submit at the end of each episode.
"This is a wonderful platform to bring exposure to some seriously talented songwriters who may otherwise go unknown," says Alex Coletti, executive producer of Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… and MTV's Unplugged. "The production value of the show is very high and the quality of the talent is very good as well. Jimmy is on to something here."
"Jimmy Lloyd totally 'gets' the truth about music – that it is the one thing which truly unites everyone around the world," says E! True Hollywood Story producer Michael Lynn. "Thanks to his dedication and passion, promising singer-songwriters are able to receive the attention they deserve without having to compromise their artistic integrity."
Originally filmed at New York's Gibson Guitar Showroom, the show will continue to evolve, shooting at live venue settings with a mix of both up-and-coming musicians, as well as established names such as Kevin Calaba, from the band Stars of Track and Field and actor Michael Imperioli, who recently taped an episode with his band La Dolce Vita at New York's Highline Ballroom. There are also plans to meld the series with Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase-sponsored live concert events, and to explore the songwriting scenes in other cities outside of New York.
